Transforming Education Through STEM

While technology has turned the blackboard into the Smart Board, no one would have thought that STEM vocations could render many professions trivial. Twenty years ago, no one predicted that the demand for online community managers, search engine optimization specialists, and sustainability managers would ever come to be. Imagine how important paper mails were back in the 70s and 80s, many made a living by being experts in mail sorting, delivery and many other functions attached to paper mail and even stamps.

What is STEM? STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.

Though the United States has historically been a leader in these fields, fewer students have been focusing on these topics recently. According to the U.S. Department of Education, only 16 percent of high school students are interested in a STEM career and have proven a proficiency in mathematics.

Who benefits from STEM?
STEM education helps to bridge the ethnic and gender gaps sometimes found in math and science fields. Initiatives have been established to increase the roles of women and minorities in STEM-related fields. STEM education breaks the traditional gender roles. In order to compete in a global economy, STEM education and careers must be a national priority. Each and every decision made uses an aspect of STEM to understand the implications

What should govt do to improve STEM education? The government should provide competent teachers to facilitate teaching and learning in a more effective manner.

It should also provide good roads to schools, teaching and learning materials, including laboratory equipment such as test tubes, cylinder, microscopes, computers and other essential materials.

Teachers on the field should improve themselves with the help of the government, as the only thing that is constant is change. Therefore, the government should encourage in-service training for teachers. Workshops, seminars and other training should be encouraged.
